Arthrogryposis Spoon
In my first ever engineering design project in college, my team of three had to create a spoon that people suffering from arthrogryposis could use. Arthrogryposis is a condition where people affected experience chronic joint stiffness and thus balancing and moving a spoon becomes a challenging task. Our solution was to create a right-handed arm sleeve that the spoon attaches to, and the spoon itself has a lid that can be covered and uncovered with the motion of the thumb.

Here is the full layout of the spoon. The arm sleeve is made of wool fabric and the connectors, spoon, lid, and thumb mechanism were all 3D printed with ABS plastic and designed on Fusion CAD software. There is a stainless steel hinge connected by apoxy to both the lid and thumb mechanism to allow easy covering and uncovering to make the food either secure or accessible at the flick of a thumb.
